HAPPY BIRTHDAY EMILIE!!! One of my favorite Dallas songbirds, Emilie Aronson, celebrates her birthday on Friday, July 6, 2001, at Uncle Calvin's Coffeehouse at Northpark Presbyterian Church 9555 N. Central Expressway Dallas. Eric Folkerth opens. You
can pick up a copy of Eric's new CD, SONGS FOR THE TIME BEING, wherever
you find him playing or order it online via his website at ericfolkerth.com. You can also hear him at mp3.com/ericfolkerth.
Folkearth is a good new-to-me voice in East Dallas music. I haven't
seen/heard him live yet, so more on this later, most likely. If you
can't catch his opening act for Emilie on July 6, you can try for
August 4, when he will headline the show at Gloria Dei Nights, the new acoustic Coffee Haus in Garland, Texas, another Dallas burb. In
case you're wondering, as I was, if "Folkerth" is Eric's real or just
nearly-too-cute stage name, be informed that it's real, as anglicized
long long ago from the German. Both Emilie and Eric live and work in
East Dallas, and as far as I know she's one of the few who doesn't yet
have a computer or a website to which I can link. She still sends out
hand printed cards to her mailing list. For now I leave you with a Bob
Ackerman quote:"Eric's songs tell stories the way a good movie does." So do Emilie's: )
Sisyphus Tracks NEWS FLASH Fri. 06/22/01 From ST host Mike Westerfield: All of BAD TATTOO by Jeff Talmadge
is in the "Random Roots" pool at Sisyphus Tracks, and Mike played a few
of the songs last Sunday and will feature more this coming one. It's
one of four "CDs of the Week" which will be up for about another two
weeks. No writeups yet but others are Hazydavey's NOT HAZY ONE BIT,
Denice Franke's COMFORT, and Lisa Moscatiello's INNOCENT WHEN YOU DREAM.
Lu Mitchell
sent 3 more CDs to Mike who will "get to her soon." Well, she's already
got a couple of songs on the playlist, but they've communicated
briefly, since she sent him the first CD, and he's "waiting for some
reading matter" that she's sending him.
Listen to sisyphustracks.com.
As far as I know there's nothing else quite like it on the web, and I
love it although I don't get to listen as much as I'd like.

Bell's first album has a bunch of good ones written by Townes and one
or two by Blaze Foley. Still available from Wrecks at The Old Quarter Galveston. Marq's TEXAS MUSIC KITCHEN NEWS is a Dallas, Texas, based electronic publication.
COFFEE & MUSIC? Dallas area venues perking up all over! Uncle Calvin's sets the standard with acts like these: Friday, June 29, 2001 - Clary Sage headlines at UncleCalvin's
(Photo below by John Wray.)
Clary Sage (photo, right) is a Plano-Garland (Texas) based folk duo featuring singer-songwriter and lead vocalist Shelly Clower-Niebuhr, left, and Debbie Garner, right, as pictured in their front-page story
in the "Plano Star Courier" shortly before the release of their debut
album TELL ME YOUR TRUTH, which I find lyrically rich with pure folk at
the core and only one brief foray into the blues -- "Fatt Catt." Jimmy
Reed riffs run through it. "In addition to guitar, writer and lead
singer Niebuhr plays piano, dulcimer and harmonica. Local folk might
like to know she's also BUDDY magazine poet-writer Tom Geddie's
cousin. Talent just runs in the family. Garner sings harmony vocals and
plays guitar, bass, mandolin, banjo, keyboard and a Native-American
flute." Her flute solos -- "Funflute" (#4 track) and "Mystic Journey"
(#10 track) serve as transitional and sonic interludes that leave me
wanting more. I can almost hear an entire album of music without words
waiting to be recorded. A surprise reading from Dante's "Inferno" by Ralph Niebuhr,
Shelly's husband, from the original Italian, closes this good new
recording and leaves me with unasked questions. Clary Sage is filling
in for the previously scheduled Songwriters in the Round on Friday
night. The opening act will be Calvin's volunteer Cary Odom, in her first featured appearance there.
Clary Sage will also play on the Community stage on Sunday, July 1st,
at 12:30 PM, as a part of Garland's "Star Spangled Weekend, free and
open to the public. Clary Sage will also headline at Gloria Dei Nights Coffee Haus (Garland, Texas) Sept. 1, 2001. Friday, July 6, 2001 - Emilie Aronson celebrates birthday at Calvin's! No,
we're not gonna do the numbers, but we who have seen her light up
Calvin's stage so many times over the last many years wish her the very
best. East Dallas singer-songwriter Eric Folkerth opens. Eric will also headline his own evening at Garland's new Gloria Dei Nights coffeehouse on Saturday, August 4, 2001. (See mini-feature in left column : ) Fri., Dec. 14, 2001 - Lu Mitchell & Catch 23's Annual Holiday Show at Calvin's.
Lu Mitchell & Catch 23 help launch "Infusions" More coffee plus original art in McKinney, TX Sat., June 30, 8-11 p.m. Phone 972.542.6204 Infusions,
a new coffeehouse in McKinney, Texas, has asked Lu Mitchell and her
band, Catch 23, to help them get started with entertainment, etc.
Although they have no sound system or lights or money for a guarantee
or anything, Lu and the band have agreed to play on Saturday, June 30,
from 8-11 pm. Lu says, "The
building is beautiful, and we'll work with a 'tip jar' and I am more
than happy to do this. I want to see them succeed. It's located on the
square in downtown McKinney." For those who don't know: Lu Mitchell is one of the founding members of the Dallas Folk Music Society
and is well known for her satirical songs of great social and political
import as well as for her wonderful ways with traditional words and
music, like her beautiful "Irish Blessing" and her very personal
rendition of "Pennsylvania," a song about her home state where she and
her late husband Gene lived until moving to Dallas in the fifties.
After a thirty-year career as a secretary for a major corporation, Lu
finds herself much happier as a full time folksinger. She's a great
lady, and she puts on a good show, with or without the band! Lu's "Dubya" song (pre-election version) Another "Dubya" song(by someone else) Lu Mitchell fans breathlessly await updated version of her "Dubya" song.
Americana Texas, June 2001 column by Tom Geddie, from BUDDY, "The Original Texas Music Magazine." Tom Geddie is a Dallas poet, BUDDY staff writer, and the Executive Director of A.R.T.S. For People, a Dallas non-profit now selling its new compilation cd, MOMENTS OF GRACE, as a fund raiser. At $15 and with tracks by Sara Hickman, The Ackermans, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Billy Joe Shaver, Terri Hendrix, and Dallas-based musicians Chris Davies, Rick Yost, Lisa Markley, Jay Johnson, Tina Marzola, Kevin Deal, Jeanie Perkins, and Annie Benjamin, this CD is a great introduction to some of the best Texas music you've maybe never heard. Dallas
Morning News music critic Mario Tarradell called it "a strong
introduction to modern-day Texas singer-songwriters" and KERA FM Dallas
made it the featured CD on 90.1 at Night. Copies are available directly from A.R.T.S. For People
or locally in East Dallas at Paperbacks Plus, 6115 La Vista
(214.827.4860). A generous gift from Lois Brown and David Byboth helped
cover production costs. The artists donated their songs and their time.

TOWNES VAN ZANDT TRIBUTE ALBUM set for Sept. 9, 2001 release: The following is from ROCK 'N' ROLL NEWS - Thursday, May 31, 2001: Emmylou
Harris, Lucinda Williams, Willie Nelson and Asleep at the Wheel's Ray
Benson are among the artists featured on POET: A TRIBUTE TO TOWNES VAN
ZANDT. Recorded predominantly in Austin, Texas, and in Nashville,
POET has been two years in the making. The 15-track collection is
designed to let Van Zandt's peers pay lasting tribute to a
singer/songwriter who never quite found the larger audience his intense
writing style may've confounded. Still music lovers everywhere know a
few of his most celebrated compositions. Emmylou Harris and Don Williams had a No.1 single with "If I Needed You," while Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard had success with the tale of "Pancho and Lefty." And Guy Clark's "To Live Is To Fly" was one of the centerpieces of his critically acclaimed and Grammy-nominated "Old Friends" album. Also
on the tribute album: Delbert McClinton, John Prine, Cowboy Junkies,
Robert Earl Keen, Nanci Griffith, newcomer Pat Haynie, Shaver, the
Flatlanders, Steve Earle and Justin Van Zandt. The album hits stores Sept. 9.

VERY SPECIAL OLD QUARTER SHOW Saturday night, June 30, 2001, Galveston, Texas.
The Hemmer Ridge Mountain Boys
"Yes, the original boys, Mickey White and Wrecks Bell, who backed up Townes Van Zandt, can still do it, what ever it is." Wrecks Bell's new CD produced by Ray Wylie Hubbard is available now! $15 + $3 shipping. Click here to order from Wrecks at The Old Quarter.
Kimmie Rhodes -- Some copies of Kimmie's WEST TEXAS HEAVEN which has been out of print for several years have been located, and you can now order a cd of it from Kimmie's site at kimmierhodes.com. This is my favorite Kimmie Rhodes recording, possibly/probably because the #11 track is "I'm Gonna Fly," a beautiful duet with Townes Van Zandt, but the album also includes great duets with Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. Her more recent album, RICH FROM THE JOURNEY, is also a good one. Photo (above left) of Kimmie was taken by David Byboth at Poor David's Pub in Dallas. This is a great album -- with every track a good one! Treat yourself before they're all gone!
WILLIE ONE OF THE CHOSEN FEW . . . WHY NOT MICKEY NEWBURY?
Willie Nelson's latest album, RAINBOW CONNECTION (released June 12th) includes two songs written by fellow Texan and long time Townes Van Zandt friend and hand-up-the-ladder Mickey Newbury. The Mick's titles are "Just Dropped In" (to see what condition my condition is in?) and "The 33rd of August." "Just Dropped In" was a hit for Kenny Rogers and The First Edition.
Newbury also wrote one of Nelson's early hits, "Sweet Memories." For
those who don't know or have just forgotten, Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard
once upon a time a long long time ago recorded a duet of Townes Van
Zandt's "Pancho and Lefty." Incidentally, Willie is one of the artists
listed for the soon-to-be-released TVZ tribute album. One more thing: Here's a nice page dedicated to Mickey Newbury: http://dorothyhamm.50megs.com/custom.html.
The Old Quarter Galveston Very special OQ show: Sat. June 30th Hemmer Ridge Mountain Boys. Yes, the original boys (including Wrecks Bell) that backed up Townes Van Zandt can still do it, what ever it is.
In the mail . . . Thanks to everyone who sent CD's that I haven't yet written about, including Diane Craig, Abner Burnett, Steve Brooks, Rosie Flores, and a few others. I will get around to them soon! Thanks for your patience and for taking me seriously.
